Today, the demand is increasing for comic contents on cellular phones and speech software for the visually impaired. When speech software reads aloud a comic character's speech, it is useful for both the visually impaired and unimpaired to have the character's voice injected with his/her feeling, which is inferred from types of speech balloons. As a result, comic contents come to life. In this research, a method has been developed to detect speech balloons on comic pages and then classify them into four types. In this method, speech balloon candidates are extracted based on speech text information detected by AdaBoost, and then speech balloons are selected and classified using SVM. Experimental results show that the proposed method successfully detected and classified 86 percent of 2844 speech balloons.

A circumstantial video image should convey sufficient information about the situation, while protecting the privacy of the specific person' s in the scene. This paper describes a concealment system which automatically identifies a person by using face recognition, tracks him or her, and displays his or her image in a modified form such as in silhouette with or without name, or displays only a name instead of the original video image. A method for comparing situational information obtained from the modified or raw circumstantial video image with one required in several applications is also described. A subjective evaluation was carried out in order to ascertain how people evaluate modified video images from the observer or subject viewpoint. As a result of an experiment in which the several applications were considered, the silhouette with name list type of concealment seems to be the most appropriate observer-subject compromise.

A wide field of vision is important for driver safety and vehicle operability. However, the window area of vehicles is limited. Therefore, we developed head-tracked retro-reflective projection technology that displays vehicle blind spot information. The system enables the driver to observe the surroundings in the blind spot as if seeing through the inner wall of the vehicle. The system uses a head-mounted projector and multiple cameras. We describe the system design, the implementation of a prototype, and performance evaluation experiments. Early experiments showed that the system effectively displayed the blind spot information corresponding to the operator's looking around motion.
